After some doubt that the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) would be happening at all, the event is going full-steam ahead and have just unleashed the huge list of nominees.

The video to beat? Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande‘s mega-collab ‘Rain On Me’, which featured on Gaga’s latest album ‘Chromatica’. The video is up for ‘Video Of The Year’, ‘Song Of The Year’, ‘Best Collaboration’, ‘Best Pop’, ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Visual Effects’ and ‘Best Choreography’.

Megan Thee Stallion has also raked in multiple nominations, including ‘Artist Of The Year’, ‘Song Of The Year’ and ‘Best Hip-Hop’ for ‘Savage’. Juice WRLD has become the first artist to be nominated for ‘Video Of The Year’ posthumously since Notorious B.I.G. in 1998. His video for ‘Godzilla’ with Eminem is up for the big award, as well as ‘Best Hip-Hop’.

Billie Eilish has also racked up a number of nominations after walking away with three awards last year. She’s up for ‘Video Of The Year’ and ‘Song Of The Year’ for ‘everything i wanted’, as well as a number of technical awards for videos of a selection of tracks from ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’

This year’s show also comes with a few major award changes. Firstly, they’ve dropped the ‘Best Dance’ award and reinstated the ‘Best Alternative’ category for the first time since 1998, with videos from Lana Del Rey, The 1975 and FINNEAS all nominated for the prize.

In addition, it would seem only fitting that they introduce two quarantine-related categories – ‘Best Music Video From Home’ and ‘Best Quarantined Performance’. Notable videos in the former category include Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber‘s ‘Stuck With U’ and Drake‘s TikTok-baiting ‘Toosie Slide’.

Finally, after much confusion last year, MTV have combined ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Push Artist Of The Year’ into one category – ‘Push Best New Artist’. Roddy Ricch, Doja Cat, YUNGBLUD, Jack Harlow, Lewis Capaldi and Tate McRae are all nominated.

The ceremony was given the green light by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo last month, who approved it on the condition it happens with “limited or no audience.”

“Show producers, alongside Barclays Center management, have been working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices for everyone involved,” a statement from MTV explains.

“Among the measures all parties involved have aligned on include extensive social distancing procedures, meaningful capacity limitations and the virtualisation of components where possible.”

The ceremony will go ahead on August 30 at the Barclays Center.
