Arsenal worried Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wants to leave as a hero after Chelsea win

Some at Arsenal are worried Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will want to leave as a hero after the club’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday, reports say. The Gabon international scored a brace to land Mikel Arteta’s side the trophy. But his future remains up in the air with his contract due to expire in 2021.

Few gave Arsenal a chance of beating Chelsea in the FA Cup final given their turbulent campaign under both Unai Emery and Arteta this season.

But the Gunners came from behind to lift the trophy, with Aubameyang the hero.

Chelsea took the lead through Christian Pulisic in the fifth minute, with the USA international keeping his cool to slot past Emiliano Martinez.

Arsenal then responded via Aubameyang, who equalised from the penalty spot after being fouled by Cesar Azpilicueta inside the box.

And the 31-year-old then scored the winner late on, chipping Willy Caballero to give Arteta’s side the trophy.

Speaking after the game, Arteta insisted he was confident his talisman would remain at the Emirates with the player’s contract expiring next year.

Yet the Independent say some at the club are worried that it will suit the Gabonese striker to bow out as a hero.

Aubameyang has now etched his name into the Arsenal history books by propelling them to the FA Cup trophy for the 14th time as a club.

And it seems like some behind the scenes are concerned that, after his cup final antics, the former Borussia Dortmund star will seek a new challenge elsewhere.

Others, however, are more positive.

They believe the Arsenal star may sign a new contract because of his age, with clubs across Europe unwilling to meet his eyewatering wage demands.

But what ultimately happens remains to be seen with links to Barcelona, who have ruled out Neymar and Lautaro Martinez, refusing to die down.

After the final win over Chelsea, Aubameyang refused to open up on his future.

“I’m really not thinking about this. I just want to enjoy with the guys and take the trophy now,” he said.

And Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand thinks Aubameyang’s response suggests that he’s already decided to leave the Emirates behind for a new challenge elsewhere.

“That to me says he’s gone. I just feel like either there’s been no negotiation up until now which I don’t believe,” he told BT Sport.

“I feel there have definitely been negotiations or he’s already decided I’m going to go.

“I’m going to enjoy this moment with my team-mates and I don’t want to talk about my future.

“From my own perspective if I’m committed to the club and I know I’m staying this is a moment for me to say I’m going to sort it out it’s not done yet but I will try and get it sorted out here guys.

“That just sounds like someone who is looking to go elsewhere.

“Arsenal need to do all they can to get this guy to stay.”

Man Utd contact Rio Ferdinand for transfer advice about £27m defender

Published

Manchester United have reportedly asked Rio Ferdinand for information about Norwich City’s Ben Godfrey, reports say. Ferdinand is part of the same New Era Global Sports agency as the Canaries centre-back. And it seems like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to sign the centre-back in this summer’s transfer window.

Manchester United boss Solskjaer could sign a new defender this transfer window, despite Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof impressing throughout the course of the season.

The Red Devils have seen the pair shine, helping the club finish third in the Premier League table with some impressive performances at the back.

But with Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe regularly sidelined through injury, Solskjaer wants more at the back.

And Calciomercato.it claim that United are interested in swooping for Godfrey in the wake of Norwich’s relegation to the Championship.

Godfrey is represented by New Era Global Sports, with Ferdinand a part of the agency.

And United have supposedly contacted the Red Devils legend and ‘asked for information’ about the player.

But, speaking before Norwich’s relegation, Tim Krul urged the pair to stay put and continue their development in Norfolk.

“We all know when the big money is going to be offered, heads are going to get turned,” said the Dutchman.

“But if Manchester United come in at 19 or 20 years old, there is no point sitting on the bench.

“They have to play. I will tell them. The money will come to these lads.

“When you look at how well they have done this year, some of them were in the U23s last year and no-one knew about them.

“Now they are massively sought after talent and rightly so. Every credit being thrown at them, they deserve.

“But what a chance for them to play week in week out if they stay. I can’t wait to see them on the big stage next year.

“Max Aarons is 19 now, can you imagine to have won the Championship and have a year behind him in the Premier League, that is more important than anything.”

As well as Godfrey, United also want to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho with transfer negotiations still ongoing.

Jack Grealish is another target, despite Aston Villa slapping a £75m price tag on their captain.

Man Utd could get green light for first summer signing ‘in the next few days’

Manchester United are edging closer to the signing of Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille. The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a swoop for the 22-year-old defender but face competition from three transfer rivals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for a new partner for Harry Maguire, despite a plethora of defensive options at his disposal. Victor Lindelof has been a regular alongside Maguire, Eric Bailly has impressed upon his return from injury while Axel Tuanzebe is highly rated.

Solskjaer, however, wants a quick, left-footed player to provide better balance. United had expressed an interest in Nathan Ake before Manchester City had a £41million bid accepted by Bournemouth so Magalhaes appears to have emerged from the pack.

Old Trafford chiefs have reportedly held talks with Magalhaes’ representatives in which they declared their interest.

And journalist Emanuele Cammaroto has now told Napoli Magazine that an offer worth €27m (£24.3m) plus €2m (£1.8m) in add-ons has been launched.

Premier League done deals: Every confirmed transfer this summer so far

Crucially, Cammaroto claims Lille and Magalhaes could give the deal the green light “in the next few days”.

Premier League rivals Everton, Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain and Serie A outfit Napoli are also in the hunt. The latter recently conducted a mega transfer with Lille concerning the signing of Victor Osimhen so relations between the two clubs are good. While the Toffees were looking to agree a deal at the start of March before COVID-19 drastically altered the market as football ground to a halt.

Lille appear to have paved the way for Magalhaes’ departure by confirming the signing of Sven Botman from Ajax last week.

Magalhaes has made no secret about his desire to ply his trade in English football.

When asked earlier this season whether he could join Arsenal, he said: “Maybe, I don’t know.

“But I would love to play in the Premier League.”

Magalhaes’ price tag would make him an afford option at the back for United and leave funds in the kitty for key attacking targets such as Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish.

Old Trafford bigwig Ed Woodward previously played down the prospect of a summer spree but Champions League qualification could potentially be a game-changer.

What Man Utd’s plan for Jadon Sancho ‘has always been’ as transfer edges closer

“Manchester United need a right winger,” Neville told Sky Sports’ The Gary Neville podcast.

“He’s a big, big talent, honestly he really is.

“I always think, particularly as a wide player, what would I have not wanted to have played against?

“The first thing is pace. And then you’ve got to think about, can he use his pace? Well yes he can, because he makes really good quality runs: the spin in behind, straight, but also the run inside in between full-back and centre-back – which I always think is the most difficult to mark.

“And then you think, well has he got quality on the ball? Could you just left him have it? Sometimes you’ve got quick players, let him have the ball.

“But when you let him have the ball, he can get it out of his feet and whip ridiculously good crosses in. So that’s when you’re thinking about the fact that you’ve got a real problem, as a full-back.
