Barcelona players ratings after winning over Alaves:
Marc-Andre ter Stegen 6 – Brilliant piece of improvisation to whisk the ball over an Alaves forward running through. Otherwise had nothing to do.
Nelson Semedo 6 – Calm on the ball although failed to help the attack in great measure and was brought off at half-time.
Gerard Pique 6 – Headed over the bar in the first half on an otherwise quiet performance – which is no criticism.
Samuel Umtiti 7 – Hasn’t had much time back from the World Cup but slotting in perfectly already. Classy display.
Jordi Alba 7 – Got down the wing at every opportunity, starting as he means to go on. Works well with Dembele.
Sergio Busquets 6 – Patient as you like on the ball in the middle, although some passes were a little off in the second half.
Sergi Roberto 7 – Some nice touches but largely quiet when in midfield in the first half, moved to right-back after that where he impressed.
Ivan Rakitic 5 – Not a presence that was particularly necessary for a match which Barcelona was destined to dominate, and didn’t offer much on the ball.
Lionel Messi 9 – The league is back and the league’s best player is back with it. Scored Barcelona’s 5,000th goal and scored their 6,000th too, in La Liga. Hit the woodwork twice and added a very well-taken second.
Luis Suarez 5 – Not an encouraging display from the Uruguayan who it seems will take a while to get going again.
Ousmane Dembele 7 – Bright performance but just lacked the quality when it came to the final ball or the shot, spurning a couple of good opportunities.
Philippe Coutinho 8 – Scored Barcelona’s second goal with a good curled effort and was exciting to watch.
Arthur 7 – Looked good, getting the ball moving quickly and played in Coutinho for the second.
Arturo Vidal n/a – Only had the final five.
