England vs South Africa ICC World Cup 2019 Match Summary and Highlights

Published

on

In the end, a convincing victory for the hosts. We weren’t sure whether 311 was a good score – Graeme Smith said 310 would be par – but it turned out to be plenty. That was a fantastic performance by England in the field, in particular Jason Roy at backward point who must have stopped four or five boundaries with dives.

  • South Africa win the toss and elect to bowl
  • Root and Roy perish after reaching 50
  • Stokes falls for 89
  • England post 311/8
  • Archer gets two, Amla retires hurt
  • England win by 104 runs with 10.1 overs to spare

The initial damage was done by Jofra Archer, most literally to Hashim Amla’s cranium. He took the wickets of Markram and du Plessis cheaply, before coming back to dismiss Rassie van der Dussen when he was set on 50, and he deserved his figures of 3/27 from seven overs. For a period of about ten seconds, South Africa were favourites for that match, edging ahead on the win forecaster the ball before Quinton de Kock gave his wicket away trying to lift Plunkett over cow corner for six but finding Joe Root. With de Kock joining du Plessis back inside, South Africa never seriously threatened, and England knocked off the remaining wickets comfortably; one apiece for Rashid and Ali, two for Plunkett and Stokes.

There were two outstanding moments from Ben Stokes in the field, the former overshadowed by the latter. First, his run out of Dwaine Pretorius, quickly picking up and spinning to throw in from the boundary and get him by inches. Second, one of the all time great catches to dismiss Phehlukwayo. I’ll post it again.

We have our first result, and it’s gone the way we expected (however cautiously). South Africa will have the chance to rectify things against Bangladesh here on Sunday, and England will play Pakistan at Trent Bridge the following day. They’ll be watching closely Pakistan’s game there tomorrow, against the West Indies.

ICC World Cup 2019 West Indies vs Bangladesh Preview

West Indies are set to take on Bangladesh in Match 23 of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 in Taunton, both sides in desperate need of a win to revive their campaigns. At the moment, the gap between the top four teams and the ones below them is pretty sizeable, but the team that secures a win here will bridge that to some extent. Expect the sides to fight tooth and nail for victory in this one.

India vs Pakistan ICC World Cup 2019 Match Summary and Highlights

And it’s all over! Huge win for India, and massively disappointing result for Pakistan.

India played to a seriously high standard today.

Their batsmen were marvellous, Rohit’s 140 complemented by Kohl’s 77 and Rahul’s 57, while the bowling performance was extremely promising. Kuldeep dismissed Fakhar (62) and Babar (48) when they were both set, before Hardik struck twice in as many balls to all-but secure victory for his side.

For Pakistan, winning the remainder of their matches is imperative now, whereas India are sitting pretty after an unbeaten start to the tournament.
