Man Utd chief Ed Woodward holds meeting with agents over £27m first summer transfer

Published

Manchester United chiefs have held talks with the agents of Gabriel Magalhaes in which they declared their interest to sign the defender. The Lille star has become the centre of a four-way transfer tussle involving both the Red Devils and Everton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to sign another centre-back, who is preferably left-footed.

The imbalance of having two right-footed defenders in Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire at the heart of defence has sometimes caused Manchester United problems.

While Maguire has struggled post lockdown, he is still deemed a mainstay at the back by Solskjaer.

The Norwegian feels that it’s an area United can bolster with the right recruitment.

Lille would look for around £27million to let the defender go.

He fits the profile United are looking for in that he’s left-footed and likes to play out from the back.

Everton, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain are also in the hunt though.

Lille confirmed the signing of Sven Botman from Ajax earlier this week, which hints they’re preparing for his departure.

The Toffees were ready to agree a deal at the start of March before COVID-19 changed everything, calling football to a halt.

Now Everton fear they have lost ground in the race for his signature, especially now Manchester United are in contention.

Napoli made it clear during talks with Lille over Victor Osimhen that they wanted to sign the defender.

But ultimately the pull of joining a club with the stature and history of Manchester Untied could prove too much, although the player is still weighing up his options.

“But when you want to build something, when you want to have results, you buy a central defender nowadays.

“When you have Sergio Ramos, you win La Liga. When you have [Virgil] Van Dijk, you win the Premier League. When you have Marquinhos at Paris Saint-Germain, you win the Ligue 1.

“It seems to be that the tendency is to buy players, very expensive players, forwards, and forget the essential.

“The essential has always been like that.

“In Italy, you know if you defend well, you have a chance to win the Serie A. If you don’t have a good defence, you’re not going to get anything.”

Chelsea transfer target Kai Havertz ‘could be as good as anybody’ if he makes one change

Ahead of the match, Thomson said it was clear why the likes of Chelsea are tracking Havertz.

He said: “He’s a real top player, it’s there for everyone to see and I’ve got no doubt if he does go into a different team in Europe, whether he ends up in the English Premier League, I’m pretty sure he will take it by storm.

“He’s a real talent, I think unusual for a forward player, he’ll score goals with his head but he’ll also run in behind. He looks a real star.”

Former Rangers defender David Weir also praised the variety of Havertz.

“He does [score different types of goals], he can play in different positions around the front areas and that’s a real skill,” Weir said.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard ‘in love’ with transfer target he wants after Kai Havertz deal

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is reportedly ‘in love’ with Ben Chilwell and is determined to bring him to Stamford Bridge this summer. The full-back was the Blues’ top target heading into the summer window before Leicester slapped an £80million price-tag on his head.

Lampard is looking to sign a new left-back due to the struggles of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri this season.

The defence is an area that has been identified as in need of improvement if Chelsea are to kick on.

Chilwell is a player that the club’s hierarchy have been tracking for a while following a stellar season at the King Power Stadium.

However, Chelsea have been boosted by Leicester’s failure to qualify for Champions League football.

“At the moment there is no agreement but it will be difficult to get Chilwell this summer.

“Tagliafico is also an option for sure, they are also considering Sergio Reguillon.

“They are considering him in the list but they have to sell. They have Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, he will come back to Italy this season.

“They’re going to sell Emerson Palmieri and buy a left-back. Reguillon is not an option but they may go for him if they can’t sign Chilwell.”

Former Leicester striker Emile Heskey believes there would be no surprises if Chilwell’s head is turned at the idea of playing in the Champions League.

“They have got to be realistic,” Heskey told PA. “When a top-four club comes calling, certain people are going to have their heads turned, but we’re very strong as a club, they don’t need to sell or balance the books.

“There are aspirations for individual players, they will want to be playing at the highest level and that includes the Champions League.

“The recruitment at Leicester has been top notch, especially when it comes to spending the money made from the players they’ve sold.”
