Planned Parenthood speak out against Kanye West over abortion comments

Kanye West

Kanye West has attracted criticism for his recent comments on abortion.

When formally announcing his 2020 Presidential bid in a new Forbes interview, West identified himself as “pro-life,” which he justified as “following the word of the bible”.

“Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work,” Kanye said, seemingly referencing a speech made by the Planned Parenthood founder to a KKK branch in New Jersey. It’s a speech that Planned Parenthood has since denounced.

Responding to West’s claims in a statement to TMZ, Planned Parenthood’s Director of Black Leadership and Engagement, Nia Martin-Robinson, said: “Black women are free to make our own decisions about our bodies and pregnancies, and want and deserve to have access to the best medical care available.

“Any insinuation that abortion is Black genocide is offensive and infantilising. The real threat to Black communities’ safety, health, and lives stems from lack of access to quality, affordable health care, police violence and the criminalisation of reproductive health care by anti-abortion opposition.”

Elsewhere in Kanye’s Forbes interview, the rapper revealed that he was running for President under the name ‘The Birthday Party’, and that he will make Elon Musk the “head of our space program” should he win.

Asked why he’d decided on ‘The Birthday Party’, the rapper replied: “Because when we win, it’s everybody’s birthday.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, West criticised Trump’s response to the coronavirus crisis. “I am taking the red [MAGA] hat off, with this interview,” he said.

It was revealed this week that Kanye’s Presidential bid has taken a significant blow already, missing key deadlines which mean he is unable to appear on the ballot in six states.

The rapper made his musical return recently with new track ‘Wash Us In The Blood’, which NME called “a glorious return to ‘Yeezus’-era chaos”.

The 2020 induction ceremony for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame has been cancelled due to coronavirus.

The traditional live ceremony, originally set to take place on May 2 but was pushed back due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, and though a new date in November was announced soon afterwards, that has also now been scrapped.

Instead, the ceremony will be broadcast as a pre-recorded HBO special, airing on the same planned date of November 7.

The likes of Whitney HoustonThe Notorious B.I.G.Nine Inch NailsDepeche ModeT Rex, and The Doobie Brothers are to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame this year for the 35th annual celebration.

“To protect the health and safety of our Inductees, their families, crews and our attendees, we’ve made the decision that the scheduled live event is not possible,” John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement about the news.

“Together with HBO and executive producer Joel Gallen, we will still create an exciting program honuoring our 2020 inductees, by telling the stories of their incredible contributions to music and impact on a generation of artists that followed them.”

The new announcement also reveals that the 2021 edition of the annual ceremony will move from spring to autumn, and take place in a new home of Cleveland, Ohio.

Last year, RadioheadJanet Jackson, and The Cure were all inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, with the likes of Rage Against The Machine and Kraftwerk notoriously missing out.

Stormzy surprises 15-year-old fan by decorating his bedroom

Stormzy has surprised one young fan by decorating his bedroom as a reward for good behaviour at school.

The rapper teamed up with the Good Guys Initiative, a decorating company which transforms the rooms of deserving people at no cost.

Footage captured by the BBC shows the rapper donning a paint brush to revamp 15-year-old Ishae’s room, while also discussing everything from mental health to Black Lives Matter protests.

The rapper, who recently pledged to donate £10m over 10 years to Black causes, said he had been “cheering” on the recent protests.

“I feel like I don’t have any answers, a lot of people don’t have any answers, but we’re all just trying, we’re all just getting together. We’re all standing together cheering,” he said.

“One thing I really want this movement to do is show what it means to be Black. We’re just just crying or shouting and saying ‘Black Lives Matter’. This has been real life for thousands of years.”

He also said he recently donated his social media accounts because of the negative impact it was having on his mental health.

Confirming the huge donations last month, Stormzy said: “The uncomfortable truth that our country continuously fails to recognise and admit is that Black people in the UK have been at a constant disadvantage in every aspect of life – simply due to the colour of our skin.

“I’m lucky enough to be in the position I’m in and I’ve heard people often dismiss the idea of racism existing in Britain by saying, ‘If the country’s so racist how have you become a success?!’ And I reject that with this: I am not the UK’s shining example of what supposedly happens when a Black person works hard. There are millions of us. We are not far and few.”

In February, the MC hit out at the British government, saying every iteration of it had “let Black people down”. “Since when I’ve been young, whether it’s been a Labour government or a Tory government, not much has changed for the people who need it the most,” he said.
