Run The Jewels

Run The Jewels have discussed the reason why they signed to a major label for their upcoming fourth album, ‘Run The Jewels 4’.

The duo, comprised of El-P and Killer Mike, are set to release the record on June 5 via BMG, having put out their previous three LPs through independent labels.

In a new interview with Billboard, RTJ and their manager spoke of how the group’s increase in popularity warranted a larger team behind them.

“The truth of the matter is, [Run The Jewels] outgrew our capability to handle it correctly,” El-P explained. “You just have to acknowledge what it is. This is way bigger than we ever expected it to be and I think we’re still amazed by how big it got.”

The group’s manager, Amaechi Uziogwe, added: “We knew it was time to take a step up. We didn’t hit all of the marks that we set out to hit yet and we realized, at a certain point, you need that sort of [label] muscle behind you.”

Killer Mike said that he hoped to increase Run The Jewels’ global reach with BMG’s backing. “I want to bring the energy in our music everywhere from Mexico City to Melbourne [and] from southeast Asia to Africa,” he explained.

“I’m into having partners that understand what I see when I see Run The Jewels. I see a global force. I’m glad that they share that vision with us.”

BMG executive Brian Shafton said that RTJ were previously lacking “feet on the ground in multiple territories”, which his label could help them achieve. “BMG has offices around the globe – each gets involved and puts their own unique stamp on it to make it that much more appealing for the territory,” he continued.

Run The Jewels have previously shared songs ‘Yankee and the Brave’ and ‘Ooh LA LA’ from their anticipated fourth album. You can see the full tracklist below.

Members of Trivium, Megadeth and Stone Sour are among the acts due to perform at an upcoming new virtual festival called Slay At Home.

The live-streamed event, which will take place across this coming Friday and Saturday (May 29-30), has been organised by Metal Injection editor Frank Godla. Fans will be able to tune in for free via the outlet’s official YouTube channel.

Dubbed as a “virtual music and art festival”, the broadcast will feature sets from Trivium’s Matt Heafy, Bush’s Gavin Rossdale, Suicide Silence, Allegaeon, Tesseract and more. Members of Stone Sour, Megadeth, GWAR, and more, meanwhile, are expected to be involved in collaborative performances over the course of the weekend.

Music aside, there will also be appearances from Orange Is the New Black star Jessica Pimentel, comedian Don Jamieson and other entertainment figures.

Golda explained: “I’m trying to look at the bright side of our current situation, and not only make this an entertaining way to see the artists you love flex their creativity in new ways, but hope this event acts as a place of discovery for every viewer out there.”

You can see the full line-up in the above video, and tune in to the Day One and Day Two feeds below.

Though Slay At Home is free to access, viewers are encouraged to make donations to MusiCares and Global Giving. The former launched a relief fund for artists impacted financially by the coronavirus crisis back in March, while the latter is raising money in a bid to help stop COVID-19’s spread and protect the most vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Megadeth’s David Ellefson recently shared a metal rendition of Post Malone‘s ‘Over Now’. “We’re all fans of Posty, and he’s also been a huge fan of Megadeth and all things metal,” the bassist said upon its release.

Listen to Celeste’s Finneas-produced new single ‘I Can See The Change’

Celeste new single

Celeste has shared a new track called ‘I Can See The Change’ which was produced by Billie Eilish‘s brother and collaborator, Finneas.

The soul singer, who featured in the NME 100 list this year, released the stirring ballad earlier this evening (May 27) after sharing its official artwork on Twitter.

I can see the change/ Come what may, I won’t regret today/ I can see the change/ Feel the pace of everything“, she sings over piano in the opening verse. As the track progresses, subtle orchestral elements are introduced to accompany Celeste’s powerful vocals.

Listen to the song below:

Celeste explained that the inspiration behind the track came at what was “a strange time” in her life. “I was feeling flat. I felt disconnected from myself and the world around me so I knew something needed to change,” she said.

“Ultimately the song is about hope and change but knowing that to obtain this requires effort, patience and conviction.”

Back in January, Celeste won the BBC’s Sound of 2020 prize – seeing off tough competition from the likes of Beabadoobee, Inhaler and Yungblud.

In a review of her London headline show late last year, NME hailed Celeste as being “a once-in-a-generation talent” who was “primed for superstardom”.

“With a voice that balances the fragility of Billie Holiday against the sheer power of Aretha Franklin, she’s the finest British soul singer to emerge in years.”

Meanwhile, ‘I Can See The Change’ producer Finneas has been at work on new Billie Eilish material while in quarantine.

“We’ve been in the studio, which just means Finneas’ basement, basically,” Eilish explained in a recent interview. “We wrote a whole song in its entirety, an entire song, which is kind of rare for us to just write a whole song in one.”
