PS Plus free trial starts today following great August game news for Sony’s PS4 and PSN

The latest PS Plus free games bonus is launching today and will allow everyone who owns a PS4 console to access multiplayer. This means that even if you don’t have a PS Plus subscription, you’ll be able to join your friends online without having to splash out on a PlayStation Plus subscription. The PS Plus Free Trial began today at around 8am in the UK and is set to last until Monday, August 10.

Further details for PS4 gamers in the US can be found here: “Another free online multiplayer weekend is coming to PS4 next month, starting Saturday August 8 at 12:01am through Sunday August 9 at 11:59pm local time.

“Online multiplayer games sold separately. Requires internet connection and PlayStation Network account.”

With the new PS5 console just around the corner, the PS Plus subscription remains a massive part of Sony’s next-gen strategy.

Unless big changes are made to the different services available, PlayStation Plus is expected to be required on the PlayStation 5 console.

And so this week’s latest numbers reveal that things remain very healthy on the PlayStation Network, even with declining PS4 sales.

A new financial report from Sony confirms that PS4 sales are dropping and that software is being sold largely on its digital platform.

The report, which covers the period from April through to June 2020, confirms that 1.9 million systems were sold, bringing the total past 112 million units.

Another bit of good news is that there are now over 45 million PS Plus subscribers, up from the reported 41.5 million in May.

This is likely tied to the outbreak of Covid, with Sony also reporting that this may have also affected how many consoles were sold during this period.

“Although production of PlayStation 4 hardware was slightly impacted due to issues in the component supply chain, these issues have now been addressed,” the report reads.

“Sales of game software that is downloaded from the network, as well as PlayStation Plus (“PS Plus”) and PlayStation Now subscriber numbers, have significantly increased.

“Regarding the launch of PlayStation®5 (“PS5™”), although factors such as constraints due to employees working from home and restrictions on international travel remain, necessary measures are being taken and preparations are underway with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season.

At this time, no major problems have arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.

Covering the increased in PS Plus subscription, a further statement from the company adds:

“In the Network Services space, PS Plus subscribers have reached approximately 45 million as of the end of June and, at a time when the communication network environment was under pressure, the PlayStation™Network (“PSN”) did not falter or experience any other issues and is continuing to deliver high-quality entertainment experiences.

“Operating income is expected to be 240 billion yen, flat compared with FY19 because the benefit of the increase in sales and an increase in profit from PlayStation Plus (“PS Plus”) are expected to be offset primarily by an increase in costs related to the introduction of the PlayStation 5 (“PS5”).”

Breath of the Wild 2 might not be the only Zelda game heading to the Nintendo Switch

Published

Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is one of the biggest games on the horizon for the Nintendo Switch, getting a surprise announcement at the end of last year’s E3 Direct. Since then however there has been no further updates from Ninty on the Breath of the Wild sequel, as Direct broadcasts have dried up in 2020. It is thought that Nintendo could be planning a major Direct broadcast for August 2020 where we may finally get an update on Breath of the Wild 2.

But in the meantime Zelda fans could have found out about another game in the iconic series heading to the Nintendo Switch in the near future.

Recently leaker Kelios, who correctly revealed details on the March and July Direct Minis before they were made official, in a post online highlighted some interesting trademarks.

Six titles in total featured in the filings, and they could be indications of some upcoming games heading to the Nintendo Switch.

And if some of these games end up getting announced in the next Nintendo Direct it will make the lengthy wait for that broadcast totally worth it.

The games that featured in the filings are Steel Diver, Kid Icarus, Mario Sports, Eternal Darkness, Nintendogs + Cats and Ocarina of Time.

The bulk of these titles last appeared on the 3DS but Ocarina of Time and Eternal Darkness are interesting ones that standout.

This year marks the 35th anniversary for Mario and Nintendo are rumoured to have a Mario All Stars-style collection in the works to celebrate this landmark.

It’s believed the collection, which will be announced in the next Nintendo Direct, will feature HD remasters of classic 3D titles.

These titles are rumoured to be Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.

Maybe Nintendo has a similar collection in the works for the Zelda anniversary which will feature an Ocarina of Time remaster?

The Wii U already has Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD remasters so maybe an Ocarina remaster could be bundled in with those?

That surely wouldn’t be too much trouble for Nintendo to put together for the Switch and would undoubtedly sell by the truckloads.

The other possibility, which may seem a long shot, would be an Ocarina of Time remake.

We’ve already seen how well remakes of classic 90s titles like Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 2 do on other platforms.

And a remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch would be the kind of announcement that would send fans wild.

Following the release of the Link’s Awakening remake Nintendo said they were open to exploring more remakes.

Towards the end of last year Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said: “Regarding the future, there is no clear directive to release remade titles.

“On one hand, in our 30 years of game console business we have made many past games that have been played by a many people, which have left strong impressions on them, and this is a very valuable asset to our company.

Nostalgia is one great appeal, but even in remake titles, what’s more important is to create new game experiences, fun, and more.

More than anything, we believe that passion towards wanting to remake the game from the creator of the original game is very important.

For a recent example, Link’s Awakening, which you previously mentioned, is a good example of a game that has been reviewed by customers as both ‘nostalgic’ and ‘new’.”

It remains to be seen if Ocarina of Time will be getting the remake treatment next, or if another classic Ninty title will do so instead.

It’s believed a new 2D Metroid is in the works for the Switch which could possibly be a remake of classic SNES title Super Metroid.

GTA 6 release date news: Grand Theft Auto fans at last get a positive update

Published

on

By

GTA 6 is one of the most highly anticipated games on the horizon, but it’s unclear when the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series will be out. It has been almost seven years since GTA 5 first came out, with no official confirmation from Rockstar Games on if GTA 6 will be in the works and when it’ll be out. It looks like the GTA 6 release date will be – at the very least – from 2022 onwards, as the second half of next year will see the release of an enhanced version of GTA 5 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

It doesn’t seem likely that GTA 6 would launch during the same year as that would eat into the sales of the next-gen version of GTA 5.

So, Grand Theft Auto gamers look like they’ll be waiting for a while longer until GTA 6 finally hits the shelves.

And as the wait for news rumbles fans have at last got a positive update about GTA 6.

It looks like work is progressing behind the scenes on GTA 6, with deals being struck to sort out the licensing for the game’s soundtrack.

And, from the artists that are being targeted, it looks like GTA 6 will indeed be making a return to Vice City.

This news was highlighted by tweeter @VectorHold who posted: “GTA6 will most likely take place in Vice City.

“Music rights clearing people have been hitting up Synthwave artists for a ‘Radio Station’.”

The news was highlighted in a post on the GamingLeaksAndRumours Reddit page with the OP explaining why VectorHold should be trusted as a source.

They said: “Vector Hold is a new retro 80’s Synthwave project by Peter Brian Rice from the San Francisco Bay Area. specializing in sound design and production for 80’s/90’s retro gaming soundtracks, film scoring.

“The synthwave community is very tight, so doesn’t surprise me at all that they’re sharing this with one another.”

The news was greeted warmly by fans, who were left coming up with wishlist picks for a GTA 6 soundtrack.

One Redditor posted: “Blue Monday here we go”.

Another wrote: “This would be the perfect trailer song.”

One added: “The eighties were, in the musical subject, quite the time to be alive.”

And another posted: “Every other period GTA game has real music from the correct period. Why would they hire a modern synthwave artist and not just licence tangerine dream or something?”

GTA 6 is heavily rumoured to be set in Vice City during the 80s, with a rumoured drug running story that is inspired by Netflix hit Narcos.

It has also been claimed that GTA 6 will feature a new location in South America, while there have also been murmurs that GTA 6 could be a timed PS5 exclusive.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see GTA 6 set in a bygone era, with Dan Houser previously talking about the challenges of making a GTA game set in modern times.

Houser, back in 2018 before he left Rockstar Games, said: “It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did. Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry.

“It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons.

“Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast.”
