Peace and love! Ringo Starr celebrates 80th birthday with star-studded YouTube show

Ringo Starr has marked his 80th birthday with a livestream featuring a series of appearances from some of his famous friends.

The Beatles drummer is known for marking each birthday with a charity event in Hollywood, but coronavirus meant that he was forced to stage it from home for the first time.

With Starr leading proceedings from his drum kit, the event saw cameos from the likes of Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, Sheryl Crow and Elvis Costello – who all performed a selection of Beatles covers.

After sharing clips from previous concerts, Ringo also took a moment to reflect on the power of the Black Lives Matter movement.

He said: “There’s no greater act any of us can make than to stand up and be counted when you see injustice.

“I don’t have to tell you that the Beatles’ early success had a lot to do with the influence we found in American artists.

“We loved listening to Ray Charles, Little Richard is my hero, Stevie Wonder, Sister Rosetta Tharpe – I saw her live at the cabin – and my stepdad’s favourite, Billy Eckstine. The list goes on and on.”

He added: “Black lives matter. Stand up and make your voice heard.”

Money raised from the livestream went to four charities; Black Lives Matter, the David Lynch Foundation, MusiCares and WaterAid.

Starr has long held concerts to mark his birthday in his adopted home of the United States. For the past 12 years, he’s hosted the ‘Peace and Love’ celebration event in Los Angeles on the date. Last year, David Lynch, Peter Jackson, Nils Lofgren, Sheila E., Benmont Tench, Ed Begley, Jr. and more joined him.

System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan says Black Lives Matter “never had legitimacy”

John Dolmayan Donald Trump

System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan has shared more political thoughts in a new Instagram post.

Dolmayan has shared a series of controversial right-wing views over the past few months, calling President Donald Trump the “greatest friend to minorities” in the US.

He’s now hit out at the Black Lives Matter movement, saying it “never had legitimacy” and calling it a “propaganda tool” for the Democrat Party.

Taking to Instagram, Dolmayan shared a photo of 8-year-old girl Secoreia Turner, who was killed at the weekend in Atlanta, Georgia as gun violence sweeps the city.

The photo shared sees a photo of Turner, along with the words “Say Her Name” and the caption: “BLM radicals murdered this young girl… for ‘crossing’ an illegally placed barricade”.

“The supposed black lives matter movement never had legitimacy in my view and were always a Democratic Party fundraiser and propaganda tool,” Dolmayan wrote.

“Along with antifa they have shown themselves to be the enemy of the people of the United States and have adopted lawlessness emboldened by a sensationalist media and the moronic Hollywood elites who pander to them at every opportunity.

“They will be brought to justice but when? How many more innocents need to be murdered before we come to our senses.”

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian recently defended Dolmayan’s controversial comments, despite the pair having “extremely polarised political differences”.

“Remember irrespective of the stance, only artists that truly care and are impassioned will risk alienating their base for what they consider the truth,” Tankian wrote of criticism of his bandmate’s comments.

“Our dilemma and possible fallacy is that we have two in one band. Some may consider that a weakness but the artistic, political and social dichotomy if not quadrichotomy (not a word) has made System Of A Down what it is today.”

Liam Gallagher drove a combine harvester to spy on The Stone Roses at their countryside studio

Liam Gallagher has opened up on how he once drove a combine harvester to spy on The Stone Roses at a countryside recording studio.

The Oasis singer took the machine on a mile-long ride in the middle of the night while the band were recording ‘Definitely Maybe’ in Monmouthshire.

After learning that the Roses were recording at the nearby Rockfield Studios, Liam and bandmate Bonehead headed out in a bid to catch a glimpse of their Manchester rivals.

Liam said: “We went to have a fucking little snoop. It was, ‘Right, what the fuck are they up to?’ as they hadn’t been doing anything for three years.

“I’m on about a proper combine harvester — ones you’ve got to get a ladder up to and it’s miles up.

“Off we fucking go, crawling down the road with the big fucking lights on. It looked bonkers.

“We drove it in, turned the lights off and rolled out like something out of The Professionals.”

After arriving at the studios, the pair were caught by the band and invited in for a chat.

“We could hear some fucking bassline and drums. We got caught, we went in and had a little chat,” he explained.

“We might have had a spliff and that and then we fucking fucked off. Next night they came over on a tractor. We were in bed.”

Liam was speaking to BBC Radio 4 for the upcoming documentary Rockfield: The Studio On The Farm, which airs on July 18 at 9pm.

The facility opened in 1963 as the world’s first residential studios, and has played host to some of the most popular recordings in modern history.

Queen recorded ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ there in 1975, Oasis laid down the entirety of ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory) in 1995, and Coldplay crafted ‘Yellow’ in 2000.
