Night Vision is an app that allows your phone to see in complete darkness

Published

Smartphone cameras have come a long way, and we’re not just talking about image quality. From a raging megapixel war to built-in multi-sensor modules that give users access to super-wide as well as acro shots, today’s cameras have it all. However, night photography and low light are one area where camera sensors are developing but still haven’t reached their peak. So an app that lets your phone use night vision, that is seen in pitch darkness, sounds unconvincing.

However, the trick is possible if your smartphone happens to have something called a ToF (Time of Flight) sensor. These small sensors are being equipped with more and more phones for various reasons. On some phones, this sensor is on the front and works by sensing faces in 3D to unlock devices. On others, this sensor is on the rear and assists the main camera module with some pretty creative use-cases.

However, today we’ll talk about how you can use your ToF-equipped phone to get night vision. Its pretty simple. All you need is this app called Night Vision / ToF Viewer. The app currently works with Huawei, Honor, and Samsung devices with the sensor.

Night Vision by developer Luboš Vonásek uses your phone’s ToF to quite literally “see in the dark”. The app’s interface essentially works like a camera that takes input from the sensor and gives you a low-resolution output. Not the clearest views, but it does let you see enough to identify what is what in dark environments and may be handy in emergency situations.

As per Max Weinbach from XDA, the app provides a better range on Huawei and Honor devices with the sensor and better quality on Samsung devices. The Night Vision / ToF Viewer app can be downloaded right from the Google Play Store. You will get outputs of resolution 240 x 180 on most supported devices. However, on some newer devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 + and the Galaxy S20+, the app can render surroundings in 320×240 resolution.

Apple rewards Indian man $1,00,000 for discovering zero-day vulnerability

A new zero-day vulnerability was recently pointed out in Apple’s “sign in with Apple” authentication page. The man from Telangana, India now claims to have been paid $100,000 (about Rs 75 lakh) by the US-based tech giant under its Security Bounty program.

The vulnerability affects third-party apps that use Apple’s authentication, but do not have any security measures of their own. Once exploited, the vulnerability would allow attackers to take full control over user accounts on third-party applications.

Bhavuk Jain, the programmer, also added as per a report by LiveMint that Apple conducted an investigation of its logs after discovering the vulnerability and found that it had not been misused and that no accounts were compromised because of it. Jain further explains in his blog that the “sign in with Apple” function works similar to Oauth 2.0, by authentication a user by either using a JWT or a code generated by Apple’s own server.

Jain discovered that attackers could actually forge a JWT by linking any Email ID to it and gain access to a user’s app account. The attackers could have requested JWTs for any Email ID from Apple. Further, when the signature of these tokens were verified using Apple’s public key, they showed as valid.

Sign in with Apple

Since Apple made it mandatory for apps that did not support third-party logins, many developers have made use of the “sign in with Apple” service for their apps. The feature allows users to sign in to apps and websites by using their Apple IDs instead of their social media IDs.

The service became instantly popular. Unlike various third-party sign-ins, Apple’s authentication allowed users the option to not share their Email IDs, instead of generating a random Email ID for them. This helped strengthened user privacy by making sure that the real Email IDs did not fall into the wrong hands. This also made users browsing through the web feel less exposed.

Google Maps makes location sharing easier with Plus codes

Published

Google is offering a new and safer way to share location with people. The feature called Plus Codes is available through Google Maps on Android for users. Plus Codes are basically an alphanumeric version of your address/location. You will find them on the latest version of the Maps but confined to Android users for now.

Google says, using these unique codes, people won’t have to reveal the full details of location anymore. The company says Plus Codes make it safer and easier for people to share addresses. Before this, you had search for a particular place and then look for its coordinates. Not anymore. Plus codes work just like street addresses. Use a plus code to find or share a place on Google Maps.

How Plus Codes work on Google Maps

To make use of this feature, first update the Maps app on your phone. Now tap on the blue dot showing your current location. Click on the alphanumeric code right next to the name of the location. Copy and share it with users on WhatsApp or even SMS. Paste the code to Maps and the location will show up on the screen.

Google’s Maps turned 15 recently and it received a design makeover. The changes make the app easier to use and doesn’t require a lot of deep diving to access regularly used options. The new interface focuses on five buttons on the bottom of the Google Maps screen, three of which are new on the app.
