‘Scream’ Fans Have a Crazy Idea About Where the Next Movie Should Go

Published

on

Whether fans want it or not, Scream 5 is well on its way. The movie took a major step forward recently with news that David Arquette is officially returning. The actor played Dewey Riley in all four previous Scream movies. Moreover, his casting means one-third of the series’ main trio — which also includes Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox — is now onboard.

But after three sequels — one of which serves as a quasi-reboot — and a TV series, Scream 5 needs a new angle. And some fans think they’ve figured out the best way to set the new movie apart. Better yet, the proposed concept could very well honor the late Wes Craven at the same time.

‘Scream 5’ needs to find a way to honor Wes Craven’s legacy

Scream 5 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have big shoes to fill. After all, Craven directed all four previous films. The duo’s 2019 release, horror-comedy Ready or Not, indicates they have the right idea about how to toy with genre conventions. But taking on a legacy property like Scream requires more than just a deft storytelling hand.

The franchise has been around for decades. And especially after Craven’s death in 2015, any subsequent movie needs to pay tribute to the late director and his work. So far Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett seem to be on the right track. Kevin Williamson — who wrote three of the four Scream films under Craven — will return for Scream 5 as an executive producer.

But for the fifth entry in a horror franchise, the real trick will be finding a story angle that feels fresh. Certainly, someone in a Ghostface mask will engage in a murderous rampage. Yet, the circumstances surrounding that can’t risk leaving fans of the decades-old series feeling like they’ve seen this before. Thankfully, the dedicated Scream fan base have that covered.

Fans have come up with the perfect way to bring back the original cast

One common fan theory about where Scream 5 can go is for Campbell’s Sidney Prescott to become the killer. After being the central target of four previous killing sprees, it’s plausible she would crack and grab the Ghostface mask for herself. But screenwriter Brian Lynch recently took to Twitter with an even more tantalizing notion.

Lynch’s idea is for the new film to be set in the real world. So, instead of Campbell, Arquette, and Cox playing their respective roles, they would be playing themselves. Essentially, a “real-life killer” inspired by the Scream movies takes the fate of the franchise into his or her own hands.

As Lynch points out, this opens the door for any of the series’ previous cast members to return, including Drew Barrymore. For most horror series, this idea would be too high-concept to work. But Scream has always prized itself on embracing its own self-awareness. Lynch’s idea would take that notion to the next natural step. Plus, it’s one we know Craven would love.

Wes Craven took a similar approach with ‘Wes Craven’s New Nightmare’

Without the legendary horror filmmaker around to helm Scream 5, all the series can rely on is the body of work he left behind. And it just so happens that the director applied a very similar premise to his other signature franchise.

In 1994, Craven wrote and directed Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. The seventh and final entry in A Nightmare on Elm Street stars Heather Langenkamp as herself. The actress who played Nancy Thompson in the series battled Freddy Krueger. And she winds up having to make another Elm Street film to stop Freddy from continuing his real-life rampage.

In many respects, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare feels like a spiritual predecessor to the first Scream, which Craven made just two years later. Instead of Freddy, Scream 5 could reveal Ghostface to be Campbell herself, who wants to return to her signature role. Perhaps Cox — arguably the most successful member of the original cast — will even be the opening victim.

In this scenario, Scream 5 would echo the original Scream and allow the meta-focused series to riff on Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. Will this be the story Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett end up going with? Fans will have to wait and see. But after previous entries commented on horror movies, sequels, trilogies, and reboots, it feels like the perfect way to bring it all full circle.

Taylor Swift Attacks Donald Trump: Martha Hunt and More Celebrities Praising Her Message

Published

After years of being criticized for not taking a stance politically, Taylor Swift has spent the last couple of years fighting for what she believes in. Beginning with an endorsement during the 2018 midterm elections, the singer-songwriter made it known far and wide that she’s a Democrat.

While her song “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince” points to her dislike of Donald Trump’s administration, Swift has mostly refrained from name-dropping the 45th president of the U.S. That is, until now. Check out her tweet on Trump’s response to George Floyd’s death, and the notable celebrities supporting her.

Martha Hunt

Model Martha Hunt and Swift have a friendship that dates back several years. They’ve remained close, even as Swift drifted apart from another member of their friend group: Karlie Kloss (who, as the sister-in-law of Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has a reason to stay out of this fight).

Hunt replied to Swift’s message on Twitter, “This! Trump has continued to encourage an environment for radicalized racism as a white supremacist… What did he expect? How much brazen racism can people take peacefully? He wants a race war and asked for killings last night.”

Ben Platt

Actor Ben Platt is, like Swift, also a singer and songwriter. He got his start on Broadway at a young age before making his way into film and TV with the Pitch Perfect series. At present, he stars in the Netflix series The Politician, so he knows a thing or two about the good and bad in our leadership.

Platt’s simply responded to Swift on Twitter, “f*ck yeah.” This came after his above tweet. Though it doesn’t include Trump’s name, Platt makes it clear that he’s referring to the current president, who he calls “vile, unintelligent & malicious,” and says we need to “vote to replace him or personally perpetuate evil & wrong.”

Debra Messing

Another politically active actor is Debra Messing. The Will & Grace star is also known for her main roles in TV series such as Smash and The Mysteries of Laura. Like Swift, she is unapologetic about her opinions and even co-hosts a podcast, The Dissenters, in which they speak to those making a difference.

In response to Swift’s Twitter message, Messing quote-tweeted her and added, “THANK YOU for using your voice @taylorswift13. #Trump is a dangerous, virulently racist, unstable man. Pray for our country.”

Alyssa Milano

As far as politically active actors go, Alyssa Milano must be mentioned. While appearing in such series as Netflix’s Insatiable, the former Who’s the Boss? and Charmed star has used her platform to speak about a variety of issues, while throwing her full support behind presumed Democratic candidate Joe Biden in 2020.

Like Swift, Milano frequently deals with people, including former friends, trying to tear her down. So it’s no surprise to see her support the musician here, replying, “Thank you for using your voice for good” to the tweet in question.

There’s a Secret Sex Scene in ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’

Published

on

By

It’s been over 20 years since J.K. Rowling first introduced us to her magical Wizarding World with Harry Potter. Though the books came first, fans of the series are just as enamored with the film franchise.

In 2001, Home Alone director, Chris Columbus brought Rowling’s world to the big screen with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The film also introduced Potterheads to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who played Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley respectively.

As the actors, characters, and storylines developed, so did the films. By the time, Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón came on board to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, the series had taken a much darker and mature turn. In fact, one Potter fan just uncovered something absolutely shocking in Azkaban.

Alfonso Cuarón changed YA movies with ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’

Any fan of Harry Potter knows there was a massive shift in the franchise when Cuarón came on board to direct Prisoner of Azkaban. Prior to his arrival, the first two movies were fairly rigid when it came to sticking to the source material.

Cuarón wasn’t afraid to step outside of the box, setting a much darker and more ominous tone for the five films that would follow. However, he also added his own quirks and details that really brought forth the texture of what it meant to be a teenager in this magical world.

“I had to be very respectful to the source material, but also to the two previous films,” he told IGN. “But, at the same time, I was trying to make something that I could feel my own.”

Inside the Marauder’s Map

One of the most pivotal plot points in Prisoner of Azkaban is the Marauder’s Map. Ron’s older brothers, Fred and George steal the map from Filtch in their first year at Hogwarts and gift it to Harry so that he can travel to Hogsmeade Village undetected.

We later find out that the map was created by Remus Lupin (Moony), Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), Sirius Black (Padfoot), and James Potter (Prongs) while they were attending Hogwarts. According to Wizarding World, “The magic used in the map’s creation is advanced and impressive; it includes the Homonculous Charm, enabling the possessor of the map to track the movements of every person in the castle, and it was also enchanted to forever repel (as insultingly as possible) the curiosity of their nemesis, Severus Snape.”

The map enables Harry to identify Peter Pettigrew and find out the truth about his godfather, Sirius Black.
