Twitter CEO Acknowledged “It’s easy to Abuse Others on Twitter”: Admitting that Twitter makes it “super easy to harass and abuse others”, CEO of the microblogging platform Jack Dorsey has said that addressing the issue in a systematic way is his biggest worry.

The platform is relying more on Machine Learning (ML) to identify abusive tweets as opposed to having people individually report them, Dorsey said in his TED talk this week, Business Insider reported.

“We have seen abuse, we have seen harassment, we have seen manipulation, automation, human coordination, misinformation,” Dorsey was quoted as saying.

“These are dynamics that we were not expecting 13 years ago.”

Dorsey also lamented that the system places undue weight on followers and likes.

“Right now the system makes it super easy to harass and abuse others,” he said, while adding that Twitter has created a “pretty terrible situation” for women.

As part of the efforts to make its platform appear less toxic, Twitter this week also announced that it is planning to give people an option to hide replies to their tweets, thereby giving users more control over the nature of conversation they would like to have on the platform.

“Starting in June, we’ll be experimenting with ways to give people more control over their conversations by giving them an option to hide replies to their Tweets,” Donald Hicks, Vice President, Twitter Service and David Gasca, Twitter’s Senior Director, Product Management, Health, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.

Also on 7th March Twitter Safety tweeted, “We want to move faster in reviewing reported Tweets that share personal information. Starting today, you’ll be able to tell us more about the Tweet you are reporting.”

And Donald Hicks quoted and said, “Our teams have been working hard to make it easier for you to report Tweets you think may violate our rules, and add additional context when you do. We are excited to announce a change in the flow!”

While the feature has the potential to make trolls invisible, it could make it difficult for users to correct wrong statements made by others.

Other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram already give users much more power in terms of dealing with the comments to their posts, including the option to delete them.

Twitter last year said that making the platform free of abuse, spam and other things that distract from the public conversation is its top priority.

The latest security camera from Hero Electronix comes with a price label of Rs 4,290 in India. The company says that the device is equipped with “first of its kind AI features.”

The security camera comes with AI features like person detection and baby cry alert. The former means that the device can detect and notify when a person is detected in its FOV. The camera can als0 filter out unwanted notification and will notify you when something important. The latest product from the company can also instantly notify baby cry is detected. The company says that this AI feature is available for users with a monthly subscription plan.

Apart from these, the Qubo Smart Home Security Camera is also IP65 rated, which means that it is weather resistant. The brand claims that the device has been designed to withstand extreme and diverse weather conditions across Indian households. It works both inside and outside of the house. It is also Alexa compatible. So, one can ask Alexa to show a live stream of the feed right on the screen. Do note that the device can only work with any Alexa Display device that has an Alexa built-in.

The camera also supports 24 x 7 1080p live remote monitoring. The company says that the 1080p Full HD camera with 10x digital zoom and night vision feature will offer users a clear view of surroundings even in low-light. The device also features a custom secure silicon chip, with PKI based root-of-trust. It makes it tamper-proof and protecting against malware baked by AES128 encryption, as per Hero Electronix. The company also mentioned that data transmission and storage also complies with the highest global standards of cryptographic algorithms and security.

TikTok in-app revenues in China shoot up during lockdown

TikTok and its Chinese version Douyin are making big money during the lockdown. This has been mentioned by Sensor Tower in its latest report for the month of April. Both the apps topped the charts in the world for highest revenue earned via mobile apps.

The report states that in-app purchases through these popular social media apps have pushed them ahead of Netflix and YouTube in the list. In April during the lockdown period in the country, both the apps revenue soared to $78 million. Interestingly, majority of this revenue came from Douyin in China, while some through TikTok in the US.

This is surprising because, as per the latest available data, TikTok has over 600 million users from India. But it seems like the country’s userbase is still not keen on making purchases through the app. The revenue is earned when a person spends virtual currency to support their favourite creators.  Both TikTok and Douyin have used this model to monetise.

The report also mentions both TikTok and Douyin recorded 315 million downloads globally. This is a big increase on the 187 million downloads they had in 2019. This clearly suggests ByteDance-owned platforms have been a big hit among users during the lockdown.

TikTok India faces backlash

However, in India, the platform was facing backlash from millions this month. The app was downgraded from four to 1-star on Google Play. Many users shared their sentiment towards the app on social media, and claimed to have uninstalled the app. By doing so, they were giving TikTok 1-star ratings.

This was quickly rectified by Google, and as per reports, the company deleted millions of negative reviews of TikTok from Google Play store. This ensured that TikTok’s rating improved from 2.6 to 4.3 in the country.

Google testing voice-based payment feature through Assistant

Google is testing a new feature on its Assistant that allows users to make payments using their voice. This has been spotted by Android Police this week. According to Google spokesperson quoted in the report, the feature is in pilot testing for now.

The report points out only select users are getting this payment option. This is available through phone’s Setting – Google Assistant, and click on the Payment option. You will see the option “Confirm with Voice Match’ and the end of the page, and if that shows up, voice-enabled payment option is compatible with your account.

The feature is mostly suited for Google’s Home smart devices, which could allow you to shop and pay sitting in your living room. We’ve previously seen Amazon support payment option through Alexa for its Echo smart speaker users. You can shop on Amazon, add items to your cart and if the voice payment feature is enabled, just say the word and Alexa will bill it to your attached card/bank account on its profile.

Google voice payment raises concerns

The use of voice for payment could raise security concerns for people. Since it’s much easier to mimic voice compared to using face recognition. Payment is a delicate subject, and unless you’re inside home, doing it with voice means attackers can steal money. We’re hoping that technology companies work out the deficiencies of using voice for payment. Offering AI-centric voice support could make it hard for people to replicate people’s voices. For now, we’re just hoping its use case is fairly thought out.

In addition to this, Google is also building up the features for its RCS-enabled Messages app. New report says the rich communication service (or RCS) on the platform could soon get end-to-end encryption support. Google Messages rival iMessage and Signal already offer stringent encryption norms. And there’s no reason for Google to not deploy it for its RCS-enabled platform. The report has been unable to determine whether the secure messaging channel will be available to both sender and receiver. But it’s likely that users will be given the choice to enable the encryption themselves
